First of all, please visit our blog if you are able to: mmegalle.weebly.com. The blog is everything 4A – our homework, any videos we watch, our vocabulary words, and any other info you need. You can even leave comments t here to ask about homework or just chat. Here’s a bit of what to expect this year: French language arts: We will be studying many different genres this term, including poetry, a novel study of « Sophie lance et compte, » informational texts, a Gilles Tibo author study, and fables. English language arts: This is new for us this year! For 1 hour to 75 minutes each day we will be in English language arts. We will be studying many different writing genres and will be doing at least two novel studies. Students will also be evaluated on their reading levels, which I will include in their report cards. Maths : A continuation of grade 3. The units of study are Regularities, Whole Numbers, Multiplication and Division, Measurement (including telling time!), Fractions and Decimals, Geometry, and Graphing. Sciences and social studies: Both count under « French language arts. » Some of the areas of study will be Buildings and Structures, Earth Sciences, Plants, Cartography, Prince Edward Island, and My Genealogy. Homework expectations: Each week your child should read for 100 minutes. We will alternate between French and English. This can be done all at once or spread out during the week. I ask that a parent or guardian to sign their child’s agenda to confirm that they’ve been reading. We are also starting Word Work. This means that instead of studying a list of words, your child will be studying patterns of words and how they’re put together. At the beginning of each week they will receive their vocabulary words. They will be cut out so your child can sort them into different categories. Starting next week I’ll be sending home a vocabulary activity sheet for them to complete. For the most part, your child will be completing their work at school. Any other work brought home will be work that we weren’t able to complete at home. Some extras…. In grade 4 students are expected to be more independent in their reading. It can be a challenge to pick out the perfect French book to read. Many parents have asked me through the years about great books to read in French. Here’s a little list I’ve made to give you some ideas: Souris - Raina Telgmeier Sam Chicotte – Katia Canciani (series) Nathalie – Sergio Salma (comic series) Tintin – Hergé (comic series) Le savais-tu – Alain Bergeron (informational series) Geronimo Stilton – Geronimo Stilton (series) Gangster – Johanne Mercier French websites are also a great source of reading for your child. For example, the NHL website is available in French. Here are a few other good ones: http://www.lesdebrouillards.com/ http://www.humanima.com/ http://lesexplos.com/ How to contact me: Please feel free to email me at [email protected] or call the school (902-368-6780).
