Hello all! Sorry for the delay with this. I was out for two days with a sick little girl and I wasn't able to change it. 'Tis the season! This week, we are really getting into addition. We will be doing addition with regrouping. Here are some worksheets you can practice with at home: Addition with regrouping In French language arts, we have started our guided reading books centered on fairy tales. I'm actually sending these books home with kids, and I encourage them to practice at home. In English, we are finishing up a free write. Students are invited to bring their work home with them. Last Friday we learned about similes and metaphors. Here's the video we watched: Similes and metaphors song In science, we are continuing to look at food webs. Here's a great site that talks a bit more about them:
Food Webs October is going fast, and I'm so impressed with how hard everyone is working! Well done! Math After our Monday evaluation, we will finally be starting addition and subtraction. We have already been working on our mental calculations, but we will start to put pencil on paper. This week will mostly be addition. In Grade 4, students are expected to be able to add three digit plus three digit numbers (with some regrouping). We will start with some two digit addition to get us going. Extra practice in this is always helpful, so here is a worksheet for anyone who is interested: Two-digit plus two-digit addition with some regrouping French
We will continue with our reader's and writer's workshop with a focus on fairy tales. If you would like to practice your read aloud, going to last week's links on fairy tales will help. We are also working on grammar concepts such as nouns and adjectives. Here's a game to practice identifying adjectives: Identifier les adjectifs English We are working on reader's and writer's workshop in both these areas. Everyone will be receiving new English vocabulary words. I'll put the lists up on the "Vocabulary words of the week" tab on the blog if anyone would like to practice at home. Sciences We are continuing our work on Habitats. We will be identifying food webs around the school. If anyone would like to learn more, here is a great Bill Nye video: Bill Nye - Food Chains and Food Webs I hope everyoe enjoyed their Thanksgiving weekend! In math this week, we are finishing up our unit on number sense. There will be an evaluation next Monday. They should be comfortable with the following key concepts (I'm writing them in French since that is how they learned them): blocs, forme développée/décomposée, valeur de position, tableau de valeur de position, écrire les numéros en lettres, représenter les nombres, comparer les nombres. To prepare, your child can practice their "nombre du jour" and work on this sheet: https://www.math-drills.com/numbersense/comparing_numbers_to_10000_si_001.php In Science, we are working on a mystery! We are trying to identify the skull of a mammal. The kids have worked on it in class, but learning about mammals can help their knowledge. Here is one of the sites we were looking at (remember those "Hinterlad's Who's Who videos?) : https://www.hww.ca/fr/faune/mammiferes/ We are learning about fairy tales in Frech. Practicing reading in French at home is a great way to improve, but I understand that it can be difficult to find French books. I am still waiting to hear back about an online source, but in the meantime here is a website with French fairy tales: https://short-edition.com/fr/categorie/tres-tres-court/contes-merveilleux We're starting our writer's workshop in English. For those who would like extra practice, they can work on a journal at home. Allowing your child to write what they want is a great way to help them develop a love of writing.
On Tuesday we did some art in class. If anyone is interested in more "How to Draw" guides I have a link here with many more images:
Fall Art How-To Here is our focus for the week! In French, we are continuing to work on our reader's workshop. Reading in French at home will greatly help! A few minutes a night will make a big difference, so students are welcome to bring home French books from our classroom library. In English, we are reading Mystery at Cranberry Farm. We are also working on our personalized word lists. If students would like to study them more in-depth, they are welcome to bring them home to study. In Math, we are continuing with number sense. Here is a worksheet (with an answer sheet) for those who would like a bit of extra practice: Math worksheet In Science, we are working on habitats. Eventually we will be doing some research on mammals on PEI. Here are a few extra links:
