We're starting out with a snowy Monday and a pyjama day! There are lots of things going on this week, so here's a preview:
French We are studying a new batch of vocabulary words. Check out "Vocabulary Words For the Week" if you'd like to study at home. This week we will also be adding to our persuasive letters and continuing to stretch our writing skills. As always, reading at home in French is a great way to increase our skills. Students are welcome to bring back books from school, or use their own books. English We're also writing persuasively in English! Right now we are in the free write zone, but we will soon be narrowing it down and working specifically on one area. We are continuing to read Varjak Paw. I've fallen behind a bit in posting the Youtube videos with the chapters, but I'll get back on it as soon as possible. Math We are starting to add and subtract decimals! I'll be ending the unit next week with an evaluation. I'll post a few websites with some activities, but one of the best ways for students to practice this is to help you add up things like the grocery bill. This is the most practical application of adding decimals, and it makes it more real for them. Here's some practice pages (there are lots!): https://www.uwinnipeg.ca/mathstats/docs/Arithmetic.pdf This Friday is a school spirit day! Students can dress up as their favourite book character. Maybe they'll dress up as Ms. Frizzell, Harry Potter, Mercy Watson, or any other book character they like.
Here's some of the other things we're covering: French In French, we're writing about our favourite French books. One way to support your child with this is to get them to relook at any French books you might have in the house, or even bring home some great French books from school. The public library also has lots of great French books. English I'll be shortly updating our "Vocabulary Words of the Week" section with this week's English words. Practicing at home is a great way to master them. Here's a link with some activities they can try at home: https://thisreadingmama.com/what-is-word-work/ Maths We are converting fractions to decimals. In Grade 4, students needs to go two numbers past the decimals. Here's a worksheet they can try at home to practice: Converting fractions to decimals (10s, 100s) Sciences We are starting a garden! It will be in a hydroponic kit. I thought I'd include a link to the site where we got the kit. Students can also practice their coding so we can look at how microbits can help us make better gardens. https://sucseed.ca/ A quick reminder to everyone to dress warmly! We stay outside up to -20, so I don't want anyone to get too cold! French We are starting our persuasive essays this week. Students will write a book recommendation. The best way to prepare is to reflect on what books in French they have enjoyed, and to keep reading other books in French. English We are continuing to read Varjak Paw. Here are a few videos of the chapters we will be doing: Chapter 10 Maths We have a math quiz on Tuesday! We will be covering representing fractions and comparing fractions. Here is question 1: 2/3 (2 tiers) After the quiz, we will start looking at decimals! Welcome back! I hope everyone had a restful holiday. We are taking it easy this week to ease back into work. As always, this is a good place for those who would like to add to their learning or work at home. French We will be starting persuasive texts this week. In preparation, we will be reading lots and lots of texts! We will also be going over adjectives and where to find them in a text. Here is a website with some extra information: https://www.alloprof.qc.ca/fr/eleves/bv/francais/l-adjectif-f1181 English We are continuing with our study of figurative language. This week we will look at personification. Also, we will be starting a study of the novel Varjak Paw. Here are some videos with the first three chapters: Chapter 1 Maths We will soon be tackling comparing fractions! Specifically, we will look at fractions comparing the same denominator, and then fractions with the same numerator. Here's a worksheet to practice: https://www.k5learning.com/worksheets/math/grade-3-comparing-fractions-like-denominators-a.pdf |
