It feels so strange to write in November at the top!
Happy Halloween everyone! We will have a small celebration on Tuesday, October 31. Students are invited to wear fun costumes, but to leave masks and costume weapons at home. A few parents have reached out to see if they can send in treats. That is so kind and is always fun - we just ask that they are peanut and nut free. We have students who are on a gluten free diet, and some students who cannot eat products with pork in them (which can be present in a lot of gummy candy). I have alternatives for them just in case, but I thought I'd mention it! Also, on Wednesday, November 1 we will have a pajama day. This is a school-wide event. It will be nice to relax a bit after what I'm sure will be a full night. Here's what we're up to this week: French In French, we are starting our "paragraph of the week." Students will be writing a paragraph in French about a monster. Most of this will be done in class, but some students may wish to add details at home. We are also working on French vocabulary words this week. Check out our "Vocabulary words of the week" section if you'd like to practice them at home! English In English, we will be in reader's workshop. Students will work on their fluency. They will also learn how to find the main idea of a text, and how to break up words they may be unfamiliar with. Maths We will start the week with some review. Some students will be sent home with extra math homework - this is just so they can work on their addition and subtraction skills. This week we will be starting our fractions unit. Grade four students should know how to represent fractions, how to compare fractions with like denominators or numerators, how to convert fractions to decimals, and how to add decimals. It's a big unit! I will be posting some practice work later in the week. Sciences We are FINALLY starting science this week. I have a block set aside every day. We will be looking at our environment - what living creatures can be found in it, what our relationship to them is, and how they all interact.

Also, we will be working on identifying verbs in a sentence. Here's a site with some guidelines: www.alloprof.qc.ca/fr/eleves/bv/francais/le-verbe-f1184 We will be continuing with our reader's workshop this week. I've been noticing that a lot of us have trouble with the endings of words, so we will be working on how to identify them and make sure we are saying them correctly.
English We are working on long "e"s this week in our vocabulary words. You can check out "Vocabulary Words of the Week" on the blog to practice. I am going to tentatively start our reader's workshop in English. We are all at very different places in our English reading, so we will be taking it very slowly. As always, practicing our reading at home is very helpful. Maths On Thursday we will be having our addition and subtraction evaluation. Practicing these skills at home is a great way to reach mastery. Here are some practice worksheets (they're live, so they don't need to be printed out): Subtraction worksheet Class code: ycn8595

English In English we will be working on finishing our stories. Students can access their stories any time at home by going to Google Classroom. To sign in, they need to know their usernames and passwords. Unfortunately I'm not allowed to email passwords to parents, but I've encouraged the kids to write them down so they access it if they would like to. We will also be continuing our work on identifying the parts of a story. This is something we do in both English and French. Here's a little video that goes over it: study.com/academy/lesson/story-elements-lesson-for-kids.html#:~:text=There%20are%20five%20story%20elements,that%20happen%3B%20and%20the%20solution.
