Happy Halloween!!! It's Spirit Week here at Sherwood.
This Monday, we will be celebrating in our costumes. There will still be work to do, but we will definitely be having fun later. On Tuesday, we are having a pyjama day! Let's be comfy cozy On Wednesday, we are wearing our Sherwood colours! You can wear Sherwood t shirts, sweatshirts, or just wear green. A reminder that we are not at school on Thursday and Friday. The teachers will be at PEITF, learning all kinds of new techniques and practices for the classroom. With this shortened week, we will still be working hard! One thing I would like students to do is practice their section of the "In Flanders Fields" poem (we are reading a stanza of it in French during the assembly). Here's a copy in case they are missing theirs: À nos jeunes désabusés À vous porter l’oriflamme Et de garder au fond de l’âme Le goût de vivre en liberté. Acceptez le défi, sinon Les coquelicots se faneront Au champ d’honneur. Please also sign the permission form for "Roots of Empathy." I will be sending home the students' portfolios today. You can keep the contents of the portfolio. Please return the clear duo-tang they come in!

Dear parents and guardians,
I've sent an email, but just in case I thought I'd mention it here: we are having a pajama day tomorrow! Please let me know if you have any questions. Another short week - October really flies! I've been sitting with students to figure out their reading levels in French. This means that I'll soon be able to start guided reading. With that in mind, some students will be bringing home books to practice (if time allows). I'll let you know if your child will be bringing home books. French This week, we are working on adjectives. We have three objectives: we should be able to identify them, we should be able to convert them to their feminine form, and we should be able to convert them to their plural form. Here's a little guide to converting adjectives to feminine. There is a link for practice at the bottom: fr.tsedryk.ca/grammaire/adjectif/adj_fem.htm I am hoping to get start guided reading this week. We will be studying fairy tales.
English In English, we are starting to study long a words. Check out "Vocabulary words of the week." I've posted the list there. Students can use their word work strategies to study the words. We are also continuing our study of narratives. In writing we are working on our stories. Students are welcome to take these home to work on. Maths We are starting addition! In grade 4, students should be able to add three digit plus three digit numbers together. They should also have an array of estimation strategies. Below is a worksheet for them to practice, but on Thursday I'll be also posting a series of games. www.math-drills.com/addition/addition_all_regrouping_3digit_001.php I hope everyone had a restful long weekend! French This week in French, we are starting to learn about the 8 categories of words. We are working this week on determinants and we will start adjectives. I encourage students to read in French as much as possible at home! English In English, we will be starting to write and read narrative texts. We will learn about story structure and invent our own stories to go with it. It's a pretty short one - students need to be able to compare and order numbers up to 10 000. There are a lot of worksheets on this site on how to compare numbers: www.math-salamanders.com/comparing-numbers.html#:~:text=Comparing%20numbers%20to%2010%2C000,be%20the%20most%20significant%20digit.. Social studies: We are studying the map of Canada! I really like this game online that helps students connect the provinces and territories: https://www.geoguessr.com/seterra/fr/vgp/3006 Students have their first math quiz tomorrow! Here is the number they will be working on:
1699 Remember, to receive full marks students need to represent the number with base 10 blocks, with expanded notation ("décomposée"), with a place value chart (tableau de valeur de position), with letters, and with a realistic real-life example. |
